The dental implant is not the replacement tooth. The implant is the titanium rod that is surgically implanted into the jawbone to allow for the permanent mounting of the replacement tooth or the dental bridge. Neither the replacement tooth, nor the bridge, is anchored to natural teeth.
The doctors and the team of oral healthcare professionals at Bella Via Dental, located near you in Mesa, Arizona, want to educate their patients, current and new, on the options available for implant-supported replacement teeth.
Below you will find a list and description of the three options available to patients when considering implant-supported replacement teeth.
During the procedure of implanting the rod into the jawbone, an abutment is attached to the implant. When healed, the rod will be below the gumline. The abutment will be above the gumline used to anchor the replacement tooth. The replacement tooth, or the crown, is permanent and cannot be removed.
For this procedure, the missing teeth need to be contiguous. An implant is surgically embedded into the jawbone at each end of the gap created by the missing teeth. Unlike the replacement of a single tooth, it is not necessary for an implant to be rooted in each tooth socket.
The abutments will be attached to each end implant to anchor the bridge containing the missing teeth. This replacement option is permanent, and the bridge cannot be removed.
This option is for the replacement of all of the upper or all of the lower teeth. In other words, these removable dentures are supported by implants.
This procedure is recommended for patients with significant loss of bone and gum tissue.
Like the replacement procedure for multiple teeth described above, there is not the need to surgically embed a rod into each tooth socket. The number of the implants and the placement of the abutments will depend upon the size of the jaw, the bone density, and the area of work.
These removable dentures provide the necessary support to the cheeks, the lips, and the facial skeleton.
